British Canoeing offer several levels of leadership courses depending on the environment you are choosing to paddle.

Sea Kayak Leader Training

Paddlesports Leader Training

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Leader award is targeted at paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in benign, sheltered water environments.

British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader Training courses are available to support you in your development of the required skills. These courses typically cover leadership skills, and the associated personal skills, safety and rescue skills. We are also be able to help you identify an appropriate action plan to support your progress towards a successful assessment. We can offer additional coaching support in your chosen craft as you make your way to assessment.

Paddlesports Touring Leader Training

The British Canoeing Paddlesport touring awards allows leaders to lead participants on trips in large pieces of open water and easy white water rivers. This is the perfect leadership award for experienced leaders who operate on the larger lakes of the UK and on simple white water rivers that may connect these bodies of water.

Canoe Leader Training

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Canoe Leader Award shows you have the personal skill level required to lead a group of up to four solo canoe paddlers or three tandem canoe crews. This is in moderate white water and moderate inland water.

The Canoe Leader course content emphasises the application of a variety of techniques appropriate for moving water – grade 2 (3), and exposed open water, no more than 500 metres off shore and in wind strengths that do not exceed Beaufort force 4. This requires the paddler to perform appropriate and effective manoeuvres in real situations. We are also be able to help you identify an appropriate action plan to support your progress towards a successful assessment. We can offer additional coaching support in your chosen craft as you make your way to assessment.

White Water Leader Training

The White Water Kayak Leader course delivers the skill level required to lead a group of paddlers in appropriate locations, up to moderate white water conditions and to judge the conditions and the standard of the group and make appropriate decisions along with the need to modify plans as required.

The White Water Kayak Leader course content emphasises the application of strokes to achieve suitable techniques and boat control in real situations on rivers up to Grade 3.
