Coaching Courses

British Canoeing offer several pathways into coaching. More recently the route into coaching has been simplified to allow direct access to coaching at a more challenging level to those who possess the correct skills and prerequisites.

Check out the coaching courses we are running below and if you are not sure what suits, feel free to contact us.

Paddlesports Instructor

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Instructor is an entry level point qualification.

The qualification will support the instructor with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities to support learning and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding.

To find out more about the qualification visit the British Canoeing Paddlesports Instructor page.

Sheltered Water Coach Training and Assessment

Sheltered water coach award is the first step on the discipline specific route of coaching. This award permits coaches to deliver coaching in sheltered environments in a chosen craft.

The 2 day training course focuses on the “What” and “How” of coaching, seeking to build upon your core training in the environment and craft that you wish to coach clients. There are combined options of canoe and kayak available.

We aim to give you the best opportunity to show your skills, you can book onto our set assessment days and we will provide mock students – or we can come to your club or centre and assess you with your own students. Either way, the one day assessment process is aimed at giving you the best chance of demonstrating your abilities.

White Water Coach Training and Assessment

White water coach award is the next step on the coaching pathway after core coach if you are looking to coach people in water up to Grade 3. The course is designed to be “on the river” practical allowing you the time and opportunity to see and learn the skills of good coaching in the moderate water environment.

The training is intensive but sets you up with the skills and an action plan to go forward to assessment.

The assessment is one day and will assess you coaching on grade 2/3 water at set locations. We can provide mock students and we will observe your skills.
